Sleep apnea is a condition where the patient goes through brief episodes where there is a cessation of breathing, to ease which VPAP devices are used. Often this is also accompanied by noisy breathing and low breathing. Sufferers of sleep apnea are often lethargic and feel abnormally sleepy during the day. They also often complain of headache brought about by lack of oxygen. Sleep apnea affects obese people more. Sleeping on the side is said to reduce symptoms a little. There are several devices available to keep the airway open. Smokers often suffer from sleep apnea.
Today those who suffer disturbed sleep can use BiPAP machines, VPAP machine, and bi-level machine. Only a physician can determine the best machine for you. Sleep apnea is of different origin and the machine to ease the discomfort is also different.
BiPAP machines are not different from a Bi-level machine or a VPAP machine. These machines work in two ways. In the first place they ensure a steady flow of air into the lungs. They also help to keep the airway open so that there is more oxygen concentration in the lungs. There is a mask to be worn over the face and head. When the patient exhales, the machine goes into action, applying pressure on the lungs so that the alveoli remain open. The other features are these:
The two different levels of pressure are expiratory and inspiratory. Because there are two levels of pressure, the machine is called bi-level. Resmed VPAP IV machine is a compact one that has proven efficiency. It is a boon to those who suffer from sleep apnea and wake up in the morning groggy. These machines are fully portable and can be moved from room to room effortlessly.
Some of these machines come with humidifiers which deliver moist air that the lung needs. This keeps the throat moist also. VPAP machines are also used in chronic lung disease and congestive heart failure conditions. The setting of the VPAP machine can be done only by a technician who is trained in using the machine. Once set, the setting can be manipulated by the patient. VPAP devices are generally used long term so the patient should be educated about its use.
