What is ZMA?
ZMA (zinc monomethionine and aspartate and magnesium Aspartate) is a synergetic combination of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6. The original ZMA formula is composed of zinc monomethionine and aspartate (30 mg), magnesium aspartate (450 mg), and vitamin B6 as pyridoxine hydrochloride (10.5 mg). The formula has been designed with an exclusive patented process, which improves the absorption and utilization of both zinc and magnesium.
How does it work?
ZMA is a mineral formula, clinically proven to increase anabolic hormones and enhance muscle strength in athletes. ZMA plays an important role in acquiring the nutrients, which are lost during the intense workout session; either through perspiration or metabolism .ZMA is an ideal supplement to meet the required amount of zinc and magnesium which is difficult to get solely through normal diet.
Zinc is believed to support protein synthesis. Since protein is vital for muscle building, zinc becomes important for muscle growth. Similarly, magnesium is involved in more than 300 metabolic reactions. It is essential for bone strength, a strong immune system, muscle contractions and a healthy nervous system. Magnesium deficiency can lead to poor sleep. The other important nutrient found in ZMA is Vitamin B6, which is known to enhance body growth by metabolizing protein.
Some other important benefits of ZMA:
Improves immune system functioning
Since one of the primary components of ZMA is zinc, by adding this to your supplement you will stand a higher chance at warding off the common cold, as well as any other illnesses that may suppress your immune system.
During a workout, the body and its muscles get broken down in a process called catabolism in order to release energy. So, it becomes necessary to reduce the catabolism phase in order to reach anabolism faster (the phase when your muscles repair themselves), enabling you in getting strong body. ZMA plays a vital role in reducing catabolism during training and increasing anabolic hormone levels, allowing you to get a developed body.
Provides good sleep
ZMA is a formula, developed precisely to improve your sleep that is disturbed by rigorous exercises, enabling anabolism to help you repair your muscles.
Increase Testosterone levels
Testosterone is said to be one of the most important hormones to act with regards to muscle building. It can be said that, the high level of testosterone increases the chances of synthesizing lean muscle mass. Zinc, as a mineral influences and aids the testosterone level in your body and enables muscle building.
Thyroid hormone promotion
One of the important reasons to add ZMA to your diet is to help you improve the thyroid hormone function. Zinc is believed to support thyroid gland to convert the inactive hormone T4 into the active hormone T3, which is responsible for increasing metabolic rate by essentially driving the protein synthesis resulting into enhanced body growth.
Who needs it?
Any bodybuilder looking to gain strength, increase athletic performance, and muscle mass should consider taking ZMA. Since, zinc is ideal for athletes who are deficient in zinc, magnesium, and vitamin B-6.
ZMA supplements come in pill or capsule form. It’s typically taken once to twice daily, prior to training and on an empty stomach before bed. Dosages may vary between products; always follow the instructions on the label. And more importantly consultation with a health counselor would be appreciated before taking ZMA. The dosage and proportion is very important. You can't just take a multi-vitamin to get these results. Most successful ZMA products have: vitamin B6: 11mg, magnesium: 450mg zinc: 30mg.
It is suggested that ZMA be taken 30 minutes before a workout and again about 30 minutes prior to bedtime, preferably on an empty stomach.
Safety and precautions
ZMA’s only ingredients are the common vitamins and minerals, hence there are no known negative side effects. However, more than 350 mg of magnesium through supplementation can result in diarrhea. If you are taking medication for your heart or to treat osteoporosis, you should consult your physician before supplementing with magnesium as there may be a drug/nutrient interaction. Vitamin B6 toxicity can cause neurological effects, but this only occurs when amounts exceed 100 mg per day. Studies have found that zinc ingestion of about 60 mg per day through diet and supplementation can cause copper deficiency.
When does ZMA work most efficiently?
ZMA should be taken before bed on an empty stomach (2 hrs. after eating your last meal & 30 min prior to any other supplements). ZMA will work within 30-45 minutes once ingested.
How ZMA does boost testosterone?
ZMA is a clinically tested combination of minerals like zinc and magnesium, lack of which can stop the pituitary gland from being able to release the luteinising and follicle stimulating hormones that stimulate testosterone production in the testes. ZMA provides adequate amount of zinc to your body, thus helping you to raise testosterone level.
ZMA has any allergens?
ZMA is well accepted by a large amount of highly allergic persons, as it is free of the most widespread allergens such as corn, soy, yeast, rice, barley, wheat, lactose (milk sugar) and all milk, citrus, fish and egg products. It also has no additional flavorings, sugars, salts, artificial sweeteners, colorings, preservatives or salocylates.ZMA has no recognized side effects but it must be taken in the correct amounts to the precise proportions used in most studies – that is 11 mg of vitamin B-6, 450 mg of magnesium and 30 mg of zinc.
How does it affect muscle growth?
Zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, found in ZMA have the ability to support protein synthesis which is essential for the body's ongoing growth, reparation, and maintenance of its skeletal muscle groups.
How does ZMA improve the immune system?
Thymus gland, a specialized organ of immune system uses zinc to promote the growth of T cells that attacks a foreign substance and protects you from infection.
Can I use ZMA with other supplements?
