Recovering from a gymn injury

After working out in the gymn for a year and getting bored with weight training, I shifted to toning and cardio. I ended up busting both my knees thanks to excessive aerobics, Zumba and stepper exercises. I'm now undergoing physio therapy with ultrasound and some basic exercises that the doctor suggested Question : How do I get back to the routine. How do I build enough muscle again around my knees so that legs back to being normal and I'm able to all activities for legs.
