It may initially appear like a routine fever, but symptoms can worsen rapidly as the infection can affect the brain. If a child develops a sudden high fever along with repeated vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness, seek emergency medical attention without delay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chandipura virus (CHPV) has caused outbreaks of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in the past. It is especially affecting children below 15 years of age in India. It has been in focus again in 2026. The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2294690&amp;lang=1&amp;reg=3\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Health and Family Welfare<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to Gujarat and Rajasthan on 5 August in response to ongoing CHPV outbreaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, it is important to understand the symptoms, transmission, treatment, and prevention of the Chandipura virus, especially for parents living in outbreak-affected regions of Mild and asymptomatic infections have also been documented. Early detection and intensive supportive care can improve survival.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Does_the_Chandipura_Virus_Mainly_Affect_Children\"><\/span><b>Why Does the Chandipura Virus Mainly Affect Children?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most striking features of Chandipura virus disease is its association with children younger than 15 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists do not yet have a single, complete explanation for this pattern.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/42260362\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NCDC data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that susceptibility may be <\/span><b>age-dependent<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Earlier studies found lower evidence of previous exposure to CHPV among children than among adults. Adults in affected areas may have been exposed previously and may therefore carry neutralising antibodies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is different from simply saying that children develop the disease because they have &#8220;weak immunity.&#8221; The relationship between age, previous exposure, immune response, and severe neurological disease is more complex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research is continuing. A 2026 genomic study notes that the viral and host factors responsible for rapid neurological disease in children remain incompletely understood. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/10.1128\/spectrum.01578-25\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study was published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microbiology Spectrum<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Serious_Have_Chandipura_Virus_Outbreaks_Been_in_India\"><\/span><b>How Serious Have Chandipura Virus Outbreaks Been in India?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India has had many CHPV outbreaks, but analysing them requires careful attention. Some of the numbers include all CHPV-related AES cases. Others include CHPV-related AES, but are confirmed cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_2003_outbreak\"><\/span><b>The 2003 outbreak<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Andhra Pradesh, <\/span><b>329 children with acute encephalitis were reported, and 183 died<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the 2003 outbreak investigated by researchers. That equalled a case-fatality rate of approximately 55.6%.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_2024_outbreak\"><\/span><b>The 2024 outbreak<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From June to August 2024, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2024-DON529\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 245 AES cases and 82 deaths in India, generating an AES case-fatality rate of 33% for this period.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For these cases, 64 were confirmed as Chandipura virus infections. The WHO documented this as India\u2019s largest CHPV outbreak in twenty years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NCDC later noted that through 31 August 2024, Gujarat and Rajasthan together reported 250 AES cases, of which 66 were confirmed as CHPV. 82 deaths were reported among the AES cases, and 29 deaths were reported among the laboratory-confirmed CHPV cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/403666324_Genomic_and_evolutionary_characterization_of_Chandipura_virus_a_cause_of_the_2024_outbreak_in_Gujarat_India\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2026 genomic study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the outbreak in Gujarat found that of the 328 suspected pediatric AES cases evaluated, 61 tested positive for CHPV, yielding a test positivity rate of 18.59% in this population. A case fatality rate of approximately 46% was documented, as 28 deaths were reported among the documented CHPV cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These figures are based on different locations, dates, surveillance systems, and denominators. Therefore, they should not be compared directly as if they represent the exact same patient population.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_happening_in_2026\"><\/span><b>What is happening in 2026?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 5 August 2026, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncdc.mohfw.gov.in\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Union Health Ministry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed the ongoing CHPV outbreak in Gujarat and Rajasthan and deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team. The response has included the NCDC, ICMR, and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human and animal surveillance is ongoing, along with serological studies and genomic sequencing. As per the Ministry, India&#8217;s hospital-based AES surveillance network currently includes 15 tertiary care hospitals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_the_Chandipura_Virus_Diagnosed\"><\/span><b>How is the Chandipura Virus Diagnosed?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms alone cannot confirm Chandipura virus infection.
