Vitamin B

Vitamin B is a group of eight watersoluble vitamins that play a very essential role in improving your health. These are essential vitamins that convert food into fuel and keep you energised throughout the day. Each member of the Bcomplex family differs in structure and performs different functions in the body. Bcomplex includes thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6), biotin (vitamin B7), folate (vitamin B9) and cobalamin (vitamin B12). These vitamins are good for the skin, hair and brain health.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine): This vitamin helps in the formation of new cells in the body. It enhances the immune health and is often referred to as an ‘antistress vitamin’. It also has a role in the breakdown of simple carbohydrates.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Vitamin B2 is a strong antioxidant that damages free radicals in the body, which are responsible for cell damage, early onset of ageing and cardiovascular diseases. B2 is also helpful in the formation of red blood cells. This helps in the better circulation of oxygenated blood throughout the body.

Vitamin B7 (Biotin): B7 is called as a beauty vitamin as it maintains the health of your skin, hair and nails. Also, it is helpful for diabetics because it keeps a check on the blood sugar level. Biotin is helpful for pregnant women as well since it helps in the normal growth and development of the baby, and reduces the chances of neurological birth defects.

Vitamin B9 (Folate): B9 is also commonly known as folic acid, which is its synthetic form and is used in foods and supplements. Studies say that this vitamin is helpful in preventing memory loss and reduces the chances of depression. It is healthy for pregnant women to consume this vitamin as it helps in the normal growth of the baby and prevents the occurrence of neurological birth defects.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin): This vitamin works with vitamin B9 for the production of red blood cells in the body. Together, they help in the proper functioning of iron present in the blood, which is involved in the production of haemoglobin – the blood pigment that transports oxygen in the body.
