During a Thanksgiving dinner held at the United Nations headquarters in 1965, spiritual guru Sri Chinmoy, came up with the concept for World Gratitude Day. That was the moment when he and other people who were there at the meal committed to celebrating September 21 as the day of appreciation, every year. In 1977, a special event was held in honour of Sri Chinmoy and during that occasion, a resolution was taken and it was voted to formally mark World Gratitude Day.
