National Energy Conservation Day is celebrated on December 14 in India every year. This event’s sole purpose is to raise awareness about climatic issues like global warming and the increasing effects of climate change because of environmentally harmful human activities. Another objective of this occasion is to encourage methods of conserving energy resources. On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, let’s know all about the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCC or COP 27, a climate change conference held on November 20, 2022. 

 The UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 27)  

This climate change conference was conducted on 6th – 20th November 2022 in the coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. On 20th November, the 27th COP to the UNFCCC COP27 concluded upon taking some crucial decisions. Among these decisions, the most historical one is establishing a damage fund for the losses due to climate change. Apart from this, some other decisions were also taken at the COP Conference. These decisions are essential in restoring the damages done to the environment in the name of progress.

Several high-level and side events were organised at the conference. Many crucial negotiations regarding the climate also took place. Multiple press conferences were held to raise awareness about environmental and climatic issues. The event hosted 100-plus Heads of State and Governments all over the world. All in all, there were over 35,000 participants in the event. There were many pavilions at the conference which showcased climate action across the different sectors globally.

Decisions Taken at the UNFCCC COP 27

● Establishment of the Damage Fund by the parties of the UNFCCC (already mentioned above)

● Not to cross the line that increases the temperature of the Earth by 1.5 °C

● Establish other bodies that will enforce, educate, and evolve how we can improve the condition of the environment and resuscitate the climate.

These decisions were welcomed by António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, who was optimistic about the effects of the event.

Climate change is a subject that everyone should be aware of and needs to be taken seriously. The COP 27 discussed some of the most pivotal matters related to the environment and was a great attempt to align everyone on a global level.
